Winchelsea Beach Railway Carriage
Like dungeness along the coast they were first built on the shingle in the inter war period often as holiday homes.
Winchelsea beach railway carriage. 43d winchelsea beach. However following a massive storm in 1926 the carriage was moved to its present location. Description the property has been in the family for nearly 100 hundred years and started life as the original 1876 north staffordshire railway family carriage being situated right on the beach front and used as a holiday home by the family. Just returned from 5 days at winchelsea.
Tucked behind a shingle ridge a stroll from the soft sands of camber and three miles from the cobbled lanes of rye the village of winchelsea beach still feels undiscovered. The place has a bohemian feel to it a bit like dungeness perhaps but with slightly more structure to it and more of a community feel. What a lovely little resort with no amusement arcades or money making rip off s. This area mostly grew just before and after the second world war.
Posted on february 28 2013 by wingclipped. On the ridge over looking the sea there is an eclectic mix of old railway carriages chalets and 1930 s bungalows popular with many artists and musicians. We passed one house that was actually a converted railway carriage. It was so lovely to see the little tucked away roads with their unique dwellings ranging from converted railway carriages to grand designs.
The houses at winchelsea beach tucked away down unmade tracks radiating inland from the sea are interesting. Lots of lovely walks through country lanes across fields and over stiles. Pre war railway carriage homes sit beside wooden beach huts bungalows and smart contemporary dwellings giving the area an appealingly ramshackle and curious air.
